INDYCAR confirms 2019 Indy 500 qualifying procedure – “Bumping to secure locked-in grid positions on both qualifying days, the thrilling Fast Nine Shootout for the pole position and an opportunity to preview the 103rd Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge with a full-field practice await NTT IndyCar Series fans May 18-19 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway…The drama on Saturday, May 18 will be intense with competitors battling for one of the 30 locked-in starting positions and a berth in the Fast Nine Shootout the following day. Each entry is guaranteed one attempt and multiple four-lap runs may be made as time permits. Cars in positions 10 through 30 at the end of first-day qualifying on May 18 are locked into those starting spots for the race and will not re-qualify the next day…NBC’s coverage on Sunday, May 19 (12-3 p.m.) will feature two highly competitive battles – for the last three starting positions in the field of 33 and the pole-deciding Fast Nine Shootout to determine the starting order of the first three rows…Sunday’s action will be capped by a practice of nearly three hours that should serve as a preview of the Indianapolis 500. INDYCAR confirms LED panels for all cars in ’19 – “NTT IndyCar Series cars will again be equipped with LED displays to better assist fans with understanding how each driver is performing in every session this season and to aid the efforts of the AMR INDYCAR Safety Team in attending to disabled cars. The previous-generation matrix LED (light-emitting diode) system was discontinued midway through the 2018 season due to performance inconsistency on the cars. Juncos announces Kellett as full-time Lights driver for ’19 – “Juncos Racing announced today Dalton Kellett would join the team for the 2019 Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires season. Kellett joins Indy Pro 2000 Champion Rinus VeeKay for Juncos Racing’s two car line-up. Dalton Kellett (Toronto, Canada) recently completed his third season in Indy Lights where he captured one pole and two podiums. McLaren confirms No. 66 for Indy 500 – “Fernando Alonso will run with #66 on his car when he makes his return to the Indianapolis 500 with McLaren Racing in May. Fernando will be making his second appearance with McLaren at the 103rd running of the 500, having starred on his debut in the race in 2017, when he was entered as #29. McLaren/Alonso set to run No. 66 at Indy 500 – McLaren’s entry for the 103rd Running of the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race, to be driven by Fernando Alonso, appears to be car number 66 according to items posted, and since deleted, on the official online store of IMS/INDYCAR. Pruett update on McLaren’s plans – RACER’s Marshall Pruett has posted a good update on McLaren’s NTT IndyCar Series plans for 2019. Pruett goes into detail on McLaren adding Andy Brown and Anton Julian to their staff along with their partnership with Carlin. “I wouldn’t rule out us dusting off the car later in the year,” McLaren CEO Zak Brown told RACER when asked about running again after the 103rd Running of the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race. INDYCAR announces new element to improve cockpit safety – “INDYCAR announced Tuesday the planned introduction of the next step to improve cockpit safety for all drivers in the NTT IndyCar Series. All cars participating in an April 24 open test on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval will be fitted with Advanced Frontal Protection (AFP), a titanium piece made by Dallara. AFP, which stands a little more than 3 inches tall and averages three-quarters of an inch in width, is designed to deflect debris away from the driver. It will be positioned in front of the cockpit, along the chassis centerline. Carlin announces Sargeant to F3 program rather than Lights – Carlin has confirmed Logan Sargeant to their Formula 3 program rather than Indy Lights for 2019 after the American tested an Indy Lights car for the team at Circuit of the Americas last week. “Carlin Buzz Racing can confirm that American racer Logan Sargeant will join their FIA Formula Three team for the upcoming 2019 season. 18-year-old Sargeant, who knows the Surrey based Carlin team well following a race-winning season together in 2017, completes the team’s line-up for the inaugural season of the FIA Formula Three Championship.” Full release at the link. – Carlin – (2/18/2019)

Foyt adds Harner as VP of operations – “Motorsports executive Scott Harner has joined AJ Foyt Racing as vice-president of operations. He will be based in the team’s Speedway, Indiana race shop…In addition to managing the day-to-day operation of the Indy-based team, Harner will work closely with Team Director George Klotz, who oversees the Texas-based operation. NBC announces Tirico will host their Indy 500 broadcast – “With 100 days until the Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge, NBC Sports announced today that Mike Tirico will serve as host of its first-ever coverage of the event. Enerson to test Carlin No. 23 at Laguna Seca and COTA – The Indianapolis Star’s Jim Ayello reports RC Enerson will test the Carlin No. 23 entry in upcoming NTT IndyCar Series tests at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca and the Circuit of the Americas. Ayello further reports Enerson has not been confirmed for a race weekend at this time. IMS announces ’19 Indy 500 Snake Pit lineup – “The Indy 500 Snake Pit presented by Coors Light will feature a lineup of global electronic music superstars performing at Race Weekend’s biggest and best party, with Skrillex, Alesso, Illenium and Chris Lake headlining the Race Day concert Sunday, May 26 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The star-studded lineup will perform in the infield adjacent to Turn 3 of the IMS oval during the 103rd Indianapolis 500. INDYCAR recap from Rolex 24 – INDYCAR drivers had a successful weekend at the 2019 Rolex 24 At Daytona on Sunday as Fernando Alonso took home the overall win with Wayne Taylor Racing and Alexander Rossi and Helio Castroneves finished on the overall podium for Team Penske.
