52 Week Rankings – Monday, May 16th, 2016

By Dylan Reynolds, The Open Wheel

Our new reoccurring feature at The Open Wheel continues with the production of Verizon IndyCar Series point standings over the last 52 weeks of the calendar. All points are accumulated based on what the driver earned in applicable races via the standard Verizon IndyCar Series points system. Date equity continues to make this relevant as last year’s Angie’s List Grand Prix of Indianapolis fell off the rankings and the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race is next up on the 2016 schedule and the next race to fall off of these rankings.

Here are the rankings for the last 52 weeks as of Monday, May 16, 2016:

5-16-16 rankings

Simon Pagenaud surged to third in these rankings with his third straight Verizon IndyCar Series win at the Angie’s List Grand Prix of Indianapolis at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.  Jack Hawksworth continues to be last in P15 of the drivers that have competed in every race in the rankings.  Gabby Chaves is only 29 points behind him and has missed four races.

Looking ahead to the 100th Running of the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race, Pagenaud could be poised to move the top of the ranking as Montoya is defending champions’ points and Scott Dixon had a P4 finish last year while Pagenaud was P10.  We’ll see a big shakeup throughout the bottom of the rankings as there are a lot of drivers that either didn’t run the 500 last year or had poor finishes that will see a dramatic change to their point totals after double points are awarded for this event.

We’ll add more features to these rankings as time goes on. We have some big ideas for this project. Check back after the 100th Running of the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race for an update.
