52 Week Rankings – Monday, July 4th, 2016

By Dylan Reynolds, The Open Wheel

Our reoccurring feature at The Open Wheel continues with the production of Verizon IndyCar Series point standings over the last 52 weeks of the calendar. All points are accumulated based on what the driver earned in applicable races via the standard Verizon IndyCar Series points system. For our first time with these rankings, date equity does not play a factor as the Texas race isn’t factored in to this year or last year due to the postponement. However, Iowa is the next race to fall off of our rankings and the next race on the Verizon IndyCar Series calendar so that does play nicely with this feature.

Here are the rankings for the last 52 weeks as of Monday, July 4, 2016:

7-4-16 rankings

Simon Pagenaud now leads these rankings for the first time.  Scott Dixon has fallen to third while Ryan Hunter-Reay is a relatively surprising second. I did not expect Hunter-Reay to be so high in these rankings however he does have big points to defend coming up at Iowa and Pocono after winning each race last year. Will Power is up to fourth in the rankings after his recent hot streak.  Jack Hawksworth is last of the drivers to compete in every applicable race in this time period and now trails three drivers that didn’t compete in the remaining 2015 races (Rossi, Hinchcliffe, and Aleshin). It’s very likely that Conor Daly will pass him after Iowa.

We’ll add more features to these rankings as time goes on. We have some big ideas for this project. Check back after the Iowa Corn 300 for an update.
