IMS and IMSA announce “IMSA Battle on the Bricks” for September ’23 – “IMSA is returning to famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway. For the first time since 2014, the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship will be back at the Racing Capital of the World on the weekend of Sept. 15-17, 2023, as the headline event of a full weekend of IMSA sports car action billed as the “IMSA Battle on the Bricks” around the 14-turn, 2.439-mile road course. Newgarden cleared to practice but to be re-evaluated afterwards – “Following the event at Iowa Speedway and per INDYCAR protocol, the driver of the No. 2 PPG Team Penske Chevrolet, Josef Newgarden, was evaluated this afternoon by INDYCAR Medical Director Dr. Geoffrey Billows. This marks the third consecutive year that IMS has hosted NASCAR and INDYCAR races on the same weekend. Penske announces Ferrucci on standby if Newgarden can’t drive at IMS – “Team Penske has announced that Santino Ferrucci will be on standby for INDYCAR SERIES Championship contender Josef Newgarden heading into this weekend’s race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course. Newgarden was released from MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center earlier this morning and returned to his home in Nashville. Per series protocols, Newgarden will be reevaluated by the INDYCAR Medical Team on Thursday to determine his status for the Gallagher Grand Prix. Newgarden transported to hospital after fall following incident at Iowa – “Following an on-track incident at Iowa Speedway, Team Penske driver Josef Newgarden was evaluated and released from the infield care center. After the conclusion of the race, he fell and returned to the infield care center. He is awake and alert and has been transported to a local hospital for further evaluation.” Update from Team Penske: “After being evaluated, all scans were negative. McElrea declared Lights winner at Iowa after post-race penalty for Lundqvist – Andretti Autosport’s Hunter McElrea won the Indy Lights race from pole at Iowa Speedway but it was anything but straightforward. McElrea lost the lead and second place on a mid-race restart and championship leader Linus Lundqvist crossed the line first but was handed a penalty post-race for making contact resulting in damage while battling for the lead with Matthew Brabham. Billows to retire at end of season – “Dr. Geoffrey Billows announced during the NTT INDYCAR SERIES drivers’ meeting Friday, July 15 at the Honda Indy Toronto that he will step down as director of medical services for INDYCAR and Indianapolis Motor Speedway after the 2022 season. Dr. Julia Vaizer will succeed Billows as the director of medical services for INDYCAR and IMS, becoming the first female medical chief in the history of the sanctioning body and the track. Vaizer, who has served as the assistant medical director for INDYCAR and IMS since 2021, also served as acting medical director when Billows was on a short medical leave of absence earlier this spring. Billows plans to continue contributing to INDYCAR and IMS medical services in a part-time capacity starting in 2023. McLaren announces Palou to join team in ’23 – “McLaren Racing has signed champion driver Alex Palou to race for McLaren starting in 2023. McLaren confirms Rosenqvist with team in 2023; unclear on INDYCAR or Formula E – “McLaren Racing has signed a multi-year deal with Felix Rosenqvist to remain on the team’s driver roster from 2023 and beyond.
