52 Week Rankings – Monday, May 30th, 2016

By Dylan Reynolds, The Open Wheel

Our new reoccurring feature at The Open Wheel continues with the production of Verizon IndyCar Series point standings over the last 52 weeks of the calendar. All points are accumulated based on what the driver earned in applicable races via the standard Verizon IndyCar Series points system. Date equity continues to make this relevant as last year’s Indianapolis 500 Mile Race fell off the rankings and the Chevrolet Dual in Detroit is next up on the 2016 schedule and the next race weekend to fall off of these rankings.

Here are the rankings for the last 52 weeks as of Monday, May 30, 2016:

5-30-16 rankings

Juan Pablo Montoya fell from 2nd in the rankings to 4th after replacing his victory in 2015 with a last-place finish in 2016.  Rookie Alexander Rossi went from 30th to 18th after his incredible win in The 100th Running of The Indianapolis 500 Mile Race.  Simon Pagenaud is now less than 50 points behind leader Scott Dixon at the top of the list.

Last year’s winners at Belle Isle were Carlos Munoz and Sebastien Bourdais but each had an off day in the race they didn’t win so that tempers how many points they’re trying to defend this weekend.  In fact, Marco Andretti’s 73 point haul at Belle Isle last year is the most of anyone so Marco could be due for a big weekend.  James Hinchcliffe and Alexander Rossi could each move into the Top 15 with solid results this weekend as they weren’t in the series from this point forward last year so they have no points to defend.  The 26 points earned by Jack Hawksworth in each Belle Isle race last year are the most he’s earned in any race over the last twelve months outside of last week’s Indianapolis 500 Mile Race.

We’ll add more features to these rankings as time goes on. We have some big ideas for this project. Check back after the Chevrolet Dual in Detroit for an update.
